English is a significant part of a students’ studies. It applies to all subjects as all subjects require reading, writing, and reading comprehension. Outside of academics and into the workforce, all jobs require a competent level of reading, writing, reading comprehension, analysis, and communication. That’s why developing English skills early can prove to be beneficial as students progress in their academic careers and into their professional careers. Depending on the needs of the student, an appropriate tutor will be matched and our tutors will do their best to ensure that students develop the English skills they need to build their confidence and to succeed, and to hopefully apply their English skills in their academics and eventually into their professional life.
Background of one of English tutors from iSmart:
As an English major in post-secondary, I received my Bachelor of Arts in English from SFU. I studied Noir Fiction, Middle English, Gothic Literature, and my personal favorite, Diasporic Literature. During my time at SFU, I tutored for after school programs called Racing Readers and Friends of Simon. Racing Readers was a literacy and physical activity program for elementary school students. Friends of Simon was an after school tutoring program working with middle school and high school students. After this, I did a practicum in the BASES department at North Surrey working with students with special needs.
With my combined experience tutoring and my interest in literature and writing, my approach to tutoring has been refined to tutor students who may find English challenging or boring. In other subjects, there are answers that are right or wrong with no room for interpretation. World War II was from 1939 to 1945. 10 x 10 is 100. In English, there’s more room for interpretation. It’s about critical thinking, analysis, and the ability to express oneself and to support one’s argument with logic. In English, students have to be comfortable expressing ideas and opinions and to do so in structured, written format. This is where I can help.
I can help students learn structure in paragraph and essay writing. I can guide students to think critically about texts and to have and express their thoughts and ideas. I have material to help students learn structure and format in academic writing, as well as reading comprehension exercises to help with critical thinking.
